Parkinson Post Southampton

The chances of Charlton gaining automatic promotion from League 1 took a big hit on Saturday with Southampton's slim play-off hopes taking a boost with their 1-0 win at St Mary's.

Defeat for us wasn't meant to be in the script but it was always going to prove a tough game and one we could lose, as we did.

Phil Parkinson felt he could take a lot from the game despite the defeat and feels we had done enough to earn a point at least, Parkinson told BBC London 94.9: "We did enough to get at least one point from the game.

"I'm disappointed with the goal we conceded but a lot of aspects of our play were good."

The importance of the midweek home match against Colchester United grows even more after this. If we want to stay in the hunt for automatic promotion we must win, a defeat and we start looking over our shoulder again fearing we could miss out on even a play-off spot!

We held sway over you after a very hard game. The stats give a good account of the way the game went. I am curious though as to how much shooting practice your boys do because we had to save 5 shots out of the 6 that you had. We had 4 on target and 10 off which doesn't look so hot. We could have dropped a point if our keeper hadn't been on song so maybe PP wasn't far wrong. Though your keeper did also make a couple of saves and Sam Sodje made a fantastic off the line clearance.

Goals win games though don't they so it doesn't matter if we had a million shots on target, if none of them beat the goalkeeper you'll not win will you.
