Charlton Lose Shelvey to Liverpool

Jonjo Shelvey is leaving Charlton to sign for Premier League fallen giants Liverpool.

Addicks chairman Richard Murray confirmed that we were reluctantly letting Shelvey join Liverpool after an offer that was too good to refuse for the player and The Addicks was made, Murray said: "It is with the greatest reluctance that we have accepted an offer for Jonjo from Liverpool.

"No club likes to lose such a talented prospect, but the overall package is one we couldn't refuse, and one which was very attractive to Jonjo.

"Liverpool are going to develop him over the next few years to be a top player, and I can't think of a better place for him to go to."

A fee of £3m had been mentioned and it might rise to that but we'll see a payment of £1.7m made to begin with. Shelvey was always destined to leave The Valley but at least it's been later rather than sooner and we managed to keep hold of him for longer than many would have expected and see a good fee received. It's still tough to see him leave though but we'll wish him well.

I'm not surprised that he midfielder will finally leave SE7 I am surprised that he'll leave before the play-off's though as the move is thought to be taking place the day after the League 1 season finishes, I would have thought the 18-year-old would stay for our play-off bid as well?

A) Low fee. B) Why go before the play-offs? C) Can you get him back on loan for next season? Games are probably what he needs.

A) I don't think ti's a bad fee really. £1.7m up front and more to follow, hopefully. B) That's not something I can understand, this must have either been translated wrong or I read it wrong but I'm sure it said he was leaving on May 10th? C) This is a possibility and I'd think we'd be given first option on this.

Liverpool didn't want him, injured and we didn't want to take the risk did we.
