Burton Toying with Charlton Exit

Now free to leave Charlton if he wants, Deon Burton admits that he's considering his Addicks future as he ponders his next move.

Burton is now free to move to another club as he's out of contract and hasn't yet held talks with the club about a new contract. The 33-year-olds agent claims that there has been a lot of interest in the striker, Powell told The South London Press: "He wants to be at the best club he possibly can be.

"He's thoroughly enjoyed his time at Charlton but we've yet to talk to them about his situation - the ball is in their court.

"We're awaiting a call from them because they said they wanted to offer him a contract.

"I've spoken to a few other clubs and there is significant interest in Deon from teams either at the same level as Charlton or slightly higher.

"There has been a firm offer from one party but it wasn't right. They have asked to be kept informed of his situation. Deon's on holiday but we're hoping to talk once he gets back."

I'm not suggesting for one minute that the interest in Burton isn't genuine, however Powell's bound to say such things as he'll be wanting the best deal for his client and will also want to force our hand over a new contract. It would be easy for Burton to move on but having settled at SE7 I'm not sure that he'd really want to leave though.

Phil Parkinson wants the Jamaican to go away and think about his future before any talks take place, Parkinson said: "The players who are out of contract have got the right to look elsewhere - it's a free-market scenario.

"We've told Deon to go away and assess his options before sitting down with us."

Burton is the best striker that we've got but the injuries are beginning to come along more frequently now and with this his effectiveness to the club is being lost. An injury free Burton is a player definitely worth having at The Valley next season but the former Sheffield Wednesday star isn't any use to anyone if he can't stay fully fit.

call me a cynic but I find it hard to believe there is much interest...not that he is a bad player...he is injured quite a bit and not exactly prolific...I don't think too many tears would be shed if he moved on!
