Door Now Closing On Charlton As Sam Aims Higher

Skysports.com are doing a series of interviews with free agents that are looking for new clubs following the expiration of their contracts with their club. This has included two former Charlton players, one more recent than the other.

Jerome Thomas left The Valley to sign for Portsmouth a couple of seasons ago but that spell lasted just one season before he was released and eventually joined West Bromwich Albion last summer. Following The Baggies promotion back to The Premier League he was promptly released again.

The more recent ex-Charlton player to be feared is Lloyd Sam, who is now a free agent after his Addicks contract expired.

Sam wants to return to The Championship at least and a return to SE7 isn't expected at all, however this isn't being ruled out entirely, Sam told Skysports.com: "It's not completely been ruled out me being at Charlton next season. Obviously it's heartbreaking to get that close, the play-off semi-final. It's a heartbreaking thing."

Sam said that setting up goals was his best attribute and that he hoped to add more goals to his game next season. Had the winger added more to his final delivery last season or chipped in with more goal perhaps he'd be back in The Championship with us now?

I'm not expecting to see Sam back at The Valley anytime soon, unless this is as an opposition player. This will be a shame after he's been with us for so long but he's never really made that final development that many of us expected he would but in his own mind he has so staying in League 1 isn't something that seems to be that thrilling to him and several clubs from The Championship are believed to be interested.
