'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Keeper Happy With His Showing

David Button could be pleased with his performance for Charlton, in spite of the defeat against Burnley on Saturday.

Chris Powell opted to draft in the keeper in place of Ben Hammer (who up until Saturday had played every minute of Charlton's Championship season) due to his slight dip in form.

Button, as he told the official website, was happy enough with his performance: 'I haven't played a lot this season, so obviously there is more to come, but I think on the whole I was fairly solid and when called upon I thought did OK.'

As far as the Charlie Austin goal goes he couldn't really be blamed for the 25-yard strike, with him giving this account of it: 'It was a great strike.

'I had a couple of people who were in front of me as well so I saw it a little bit late and you just have to hold your hands up and sometimes when they go in the top corner like that there's not a lot you can do.'

Having got his taste of first-team action the former Spurs keeper is keen to retain his place between the sticks. First up are Peterborough and then Huddersfield, two massive games in Charlton's season that will take great nerve for whomever is in goal.

Button hopes it is him, and feels he is up to the challenge, adding: 'At the end of the day it's down to me. If I play well and the team is doing well then I can't give the gaffer any reason to drop me.

'I'm going to take each game as it comes and I know with the more games I play I'll get better and better so I'm confident of keeping my place now.'

It's a big call to make, however having turned to Button in the first place Powell obviously has faith in his ability so you'd expect him to retain his place as what would have been the point of brining him in for the last game if he wasn't going to keep his place, unless he played poorly against The Clarets, which he didn't.
