Clarke Signs From Bradford City
Manager Karl Robinson has added former Bradford City striker Billy Clarke to our ranks ahead of the coming 2017/18 League One campaign.
A long time admirer of the 29 year old, he's capable of playing through the middle or on either wing and he comes in for an undisclosed fee on a two year contract.
He is Robinson's first signing of the summer and the manager told the Official Site that he was pleased to have added the Irishman to our squad.
'Billy is someone that I have tried to sign a number of times and I am really excited that he will be joining us. As soon as Billy heard of our interest he was massively keen. We want players that want to play for Charlton Athletic, that can bring energy and that have a great attitude. Billy ticks all of those boxes and on top of that he is also very talented. If you look on paper, he is up there with some of the best players in League One. He is very effective - can play in a number of positions - and he is certainly going to bring goals, creativity, energy and an aggressive streak to the team.'
Speaking himself about the deal, Clarke went on to say.
'I`m delighted to have signed. I was really flattered and over the moon when I heard of Charlton`s interest, I am really happy to be here and I cannot wait for pre-season to start. Having come so close to promotion in the previous season with Bradford, my goal is to go one step further this year and achieve it. A club like Charlton should be pushing for promotion and getting a club of this size into the Championship is what I want to do.'
With 40 games for Bradford last year as they went on their Play Off run, he scored seven times with five assists and he comes in with well over 300 matches under his belt.
Clarke also said his aim was to help Charlton to promotion net year.
'Hopefully I score whenever he`s in the stadium! I`ve spoken to him (Karl) a few times. Before I signed for Bradford, I spoke to him and his philosophy is the same as it was back then. I`m just excited to get back in and to work with him.'
