Robinson - A Worthwhile Fortnight

Robinson - A Worthwhile Fortnight

With Charlton Athletic's pre season training camp in Ireland now over, manager Karl Robinson has said he believes it's been a worthwhile fortnight away for the players.

With fitness the priority and even the three pre season friendlies set up for three days in a row, we ended with a four one defeat at University College Dublin on Wednesday, but despite being disappointed with the scoreline, Robinson felt there were plenty of positives he could take.

Speaking to the Official Site the gaffer explained.

'It`s been a really good two weeks. It`s been a good trip and I don`t think anybody would say that we haven`t worked them hard. We`ve pushed their bodies to limits that they haven`t been pushed to before. We`ve come here and played against these strong teams and that`s the whole idea behind pre-season. You push your body to the limit and play under fatigue.'

Reflecting on the UCD friendly defeat more directly, Robinson went on to say.

'You don`t want to get beat. I thought our finishing was poor and they pretty much had four shots in total and scored four goals, so it just shows you that either their finishing was very good or we defended very poorly, while we hit double figures for shots, but only scored one goal. As I said after Limerick, the last things to come back are the sharpness in attack and the instinct and hunger to defend in our own box.'

Robinson could still take the positives though as he went on to say about the game.

'One thing I did see was us kicking on in the second half. We looked really bright in the first 15 minutes of the second half and looked like they were getting fitter. Don`t forget, we flew in at midday on Monday, we played that night and then had that long journey to Limerick to play a team who are in the middle of their season. We got back at 2am and got up to play against a team who are also in the middle of their season. There`s a difference to being fit and trying to get fit and that`s why we`ve come here. We`ve come here to push ourselves to the limits.'

Robinson ended by saying.

'I`ve been coming here for a number of years and we`ve usually played reserve and U21 teams, but because of the way the fixtures have fallen this year, they`ve all played their main players and that`s made it better for me.'
