In the City of Learning we learned nothing

In the City of Learning we learned nothing

Charlton`s inability to learn from previous games is very worrying indeed. The Addicks took on Oxford knowing full well, taking all three points back to the South would put a better margin between us and them. Yet in spite dominating the game for long periods they once again failed to make all the good football count by wasteful opportunities in front of Oxfords goal that has in the past come back and bite them in the butt just as it did last night.

The wastefulness continued at an alarming pace with Magennis being guilty of not playing to what was available in front of him. The critical faults that has proved frustrating on numerous occasions throughout this campaign was displayed once again. The Addicks must learn to play at the pace that is comfortable to them and not be drawn into their opponent`s game plan.

Excellent chances not taken either side of Karl Robinson`s men taking the lead on 18 minutes from the lively and on form Tariq Fosu when he pounced on a hesitation from Simon Eastwood not coming forwards when Curtis Nelson lost possession. Our winger did not need a second invitation and latched on the loose ball to round the stranded keeper, and scoring his six goal in four games to the delight of the travelling fans.

But our guiltiness in not taking the chances created would again cost us dear. One goal is never enough. Yes we managed to hang on against Doncaster Rover`s at the Valley in our last game, but every game is different. The importance of the inability to take those chances would become clear with 35 minutes played. Up to this point, the U`s provided no real test to Ben Amos in the Charlton goal. Chris Solly was involved when he headed a James Henry delivery away from danger. Unfortunately that cleared cross fell straight to Christian Ribeiro, whose accurate left-foot volley found the far bottom corner of Amos` goal.

Ben Amos should have done better. His position was of centre. Had he been central he would have saved the shot. But our keeper should not have to take all the flack. Chris Solly was unlucky with his clearance and was caught off balance. Our defence where caught ball watching which is unforgiveable. Wastefulness in football will always be punished. Substitute Karlan Ahearne-Grant had a glorious chance when he found himself in acres of space. But his effort curling comfortably wide. Sometimes it is easier to score than to miss. There is no excuse for not being on target. Inexcusable not to have at least tested to keeper.

There is no doubt we have the team to compete with the best there is in division one. There is no denying Chris Solly who does receive a lot of stick from supporters was excellent along with Dasilva. Ahmend Kashi and Jake Forster-Caskey did what was expected from them by keeping things simple. Reeves unfortunately has been out of the game a long time and will take time to settle. Holmes and Fuso duet is working well with them having built up an understanding.

Although partnership are working for the Addicks. It is clear that the need for another striker creeps up with every game played. We are relaying far too much on Magennis. He is not superman. He gives his all, but needs someone who can feed of him in times of needs. Saturday we play Bradford City. Play with conviction there is no reason why we should not get something out of this game. Good luck the Reds make us proud.
