'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fergie Praises Charlton

Goals in either half from Ji-sung Park and Darren Fletcher sealed the points for the league leaders, but the visitors served up a few scares throughout the afternoon.

Dennis Rommedahl had a great chance to give the Addicks the lead when he was sent clear through but again he didn`t have the quality to hit the target. The biggest scare was from a second half free kick when Marcus Bent`s header squeezed past the post after taking a deflection from Neville.

The result was fair although Charlton did deserve at least a goal from a very good showing.

After the game Man Utd boss Ferguson praised the away side`s spirit.

'It was hard work for three points,' Sir Alex said. 'There were periods when there was a stalemate about the game and you have to give credit to Charlton, I thought it was a really good performance by them.

'It was a surprising performance I must say, because when teams are at the bottom of the league they don't always have the confidence to play, and I thought Charlton did.'

'They had a free kick that was glanced on and it must have missed the post by a matter of inches. And these are worrying moments because 1-0 means nothing really, you can lose a goal in a second.

There have been plenty of positives from our last two games and you have to feel with Darren Bent back in the side against West Ham we must be looking at taking maximum points.

The next few games are vital and if we don`t pick up the points then we really are going down. Now is the time the players have to stand up and make that difference. The fans have got to encourage and be louder than ever. When West Ham turn up at The Valley we have got to show that it will be us instead of them who remain in this league.

Keep the faith

Unfortunately it's points you desperately need, not praise!

West Ham are dreadful at the moment, a win against them will surely remove all hope they ever have of catching Wigan. But will it be enough to spur Chalton on to survival?
