Bent Joins Spurs in £16.5m deal

Darren Bent's long awaited exit from The Valley has finally been confirmed by the board this morning.

Bent has joined Spurs in a massive £16.5m deal and this breaks their transfer record for a player.

His exit was always on the cards and since the transfer window opened the club have been trying to get the best deal possible.

He looked set to go to West Ham but he backed out of the move at the final hour and held out for a transfer to Spurs.

Spurs have paid big for the England striker but they will soon be repaid by his goal scoring antics.

Talking of his move to Spurs official website Bent said: 'Tottenham have a lot of young English players and it's a young squad, it's a squad going forward and that's the direction I wanted to take.

'It's exciting times for me and Spurs and hopefully I'll show what I can do.'

'It helps a lot that I know a few of the lads from England internationals and I'm sure they will help me settle in.

'They seem to be getting better and better every season and I would love to be part of that.'

Charlton have lost £2.58m of the deal to Ipswich as part of the sell on clause that was put in place, following his move from Portman Road to The Valley.

Charlton Chairman Richard Murray was full of praise for Bent and speaking to cafc.co.uk he said: 'I'd like to place on the record my appreciation for Darren's efforts on behalf of the club over the past two seasons,"

'He's been a model professional during his time at Charlton. He has been a pleasure to work with and has always represented the club magnificently, both at domestic and international level."

He continued: 'Realistically, it was always going to be difficult to hang on to a player of his quality following relegation, but we feel we have negotiated the best deal possible for the club and, after a payment to Ipswich, it's a sum of money that will cushion the effects of relegation for the club."

Good Luck Benty I`m sure you will go on to be a top Premiership player. Thank you for all your efforts for us and we'll see you at the lane next season.

What is your reaction to Bent's move???

Good Luck Benty a real 110%er doesn't owe this club anything. Hope he does as well as he should in the future.

We will miss him most if and when we return to the prem. The new strikers will do us a job in the championship but up in the prem its a different story. Well Done Benty on doing a transfer the right way. Not like Snotty Parker etc.

16.5 million can buy you a lot of quality players to get back into the PL. will the manager get much of the cash to spend?
