The 1-4 reverse at The Valley to Brighton in October was arguably the catalyst that kick-started the Addicks season, while the Seagulls have stuttered since that game.
Brighton followed up that victory over Charlton with three consecutive wins over Yeovil, Peterborough and Exeter. Since the victory over Exeter in early November, the Seagulls have failed to win in the League and have been taken to replays by Woking and FC United after draws at the Withdean.
Their patient, pretty, tippy-tappy football was not universally liked by their fans. Prior to their visit to The Valley, Brighton had failed to score more than twice in a game. Though Poyet has them playing a pleasing on the eye style, they can over elaborate and apear to lack a real cutting edge. Phil Parkinson will be aware that a high tempo pressing game is the way to nullify them.
Charlton have played just three times in December, all compressed into a five day period. The club were frustrated with Sunday's costly late postponement and will be pleased to be back in action again. There were erroneous reports on BBC London News on Tuesday evening that the game had been called off but it is scheduled to go ahead. Nevertheless, the travelling Charlton fans will be keeping their ears to the ground for information from both the Withdean and The Valley. Will the long drawn out takeover saga finally be completed?
Much will depend on how the sides react to lengthy lay offs. Brighton's recent form may have seen their confidence dip a little and Charlton have the added incentive that a win will take them into second place, just a point behind their opponents. An interesting evening beckons.
Gus Poyet will hope to have a full squad to pick from.
Controlled the game at The Valley.
Other than Akpo Sodje, Phil Parkinson will have everyone available.
In fine form and scoring goal.
Darren Deadman will be the man in charge.
