No monsoon at Yeovil this season but conditions were nevertheless extremely testing. The strong wind blowing straight down the pitch combined with a difficult surface, that cut up badly from the start, made passing football all but impossible. Rob Elliot found kicking a real problem all afternoon.
The conditions even affected the Yeovil PA man who announced the Addicks number four as 'Johnnie Walker' and one of the late subs as 'Matthew Eccleston'!
Yeovil won the toss and elected to kick with the wind at their backs in the first period. The Glovers had one or two good opportunities and skipper, Paul Huntington in particular, should have done better with a couple of headers.
Midway through the half Powell had to make a change when Alan McCormack appeared to tweak a hamstring and had to be replaced by Therry Racon.
Five minutes after the restart Charlton should have taken the lead. Joe Anyinsah gave Bradley Wright-Phillips a golden opportunity but with only Stephen Henderson to beat, Wright-Phillips rolled the ball past the big keeper's left hand post.
The striker made amends thirteen minutes later though when he rose majsestically to nod home Johnnie Jackson's corner from the left.
Charlton had a stroke of good fortune twenty minutes from time. Doherty, already booked, made a crude challenge. Karl Evans let play go on as the ball broke to Yeovil. When the ball went dead he opted to give Doherty a long talking to rather than issue the Irishman with a second yellow.
Just over a quarter of an hour from time, Elliot was called on to make his most serious save of the match when Matt Fry sliced a cross and the keeper had to dive full length to his right to prevent an equaliser.
Powell sent on Benson and Eccleston for the last nine minutes in place of Anyinsah and Wright-Phillips. The referee played six minutes of added time but the Addicks saw the game out without any serious scares. The afternoon's results saw Powell's team return to the play-off places as they moved up to fifth.
