Tis Not Good

The Grecians completed the double over Charlton as the Addicks dropped out of the play-off places. It has been a bad week for Powell following the defeat at Hartlepool, the manager would have expected to win both games.

Paul Tisdale is renowned for his sharp dressing and Powell is another in the same mould, the duo both sported trendy flat caps on the sidelines.

Tisdale stuck with his favoured 3-5-2 formation while Powell went for a Christmas tree shape, with Wright-Phillips and Eccleston playing just behind Pawel Abbott.

It was a day when the good fortune Powell has enjoyed deserted him. Eccleston spurned four good chances while Jackson, Jenkinson and Wright-Phillips had goal bound efforts blocked.

At the other end a series of individual errors proved costly.

Just past the hour mark, Pawel Abbott saw his effort come bask off the bar. Almost immediately the action switched to the other end where substitute, Liam Sercombe, fired under Elliot from the right. The keeper may feel he could have done better.

After 77 minutes a poor back-header from Gary Doherty sold Elliot short and John O'Flynn rounded the keeper to slot home from a narrow angle. Five minutes later Exeter notched their third. Elliot felled O'Flynn on the edge of the area and, just like at St James Park, Ryan Harley converted the penalty.

Doherty hit the bar with five minutes remaining and Wright-Phillips eventually glanced the ball home for a consolation.

It was not the result the majority of the big crowd were looking for. Powell will now have some serious thinking to do before the side travel to Meadow Lane to face Notts County on Friday.
