The Addicks March On

22/09/07 - 15:00

Attendance: 21,918

The Addicks won again, to move up to 2nd place in the Championship, into the automatic promotion places for the first time this season, thanks to goals from Chris Iwelumo and Luke Varney, his first for the Addicks.

The Foxes struck the post through Stephen Clemence with a rasping 25-yard drive, helped into the post by Nicky Weavers fingertips, but other than a Matt Fryatt effort, again well saved by Nicky Weaver they rarely threatened as the Addicks extended an unbeaten run to five matches.

Chris Iwelumo, 18 minutes, continued his goalscoring form, smashing home a flick of from Zheng Zhi after a throw in to open the scoring.

The Addicks' 2.5m arrival from Crewe in the summer, Luke Varney, 24 minutes, scored his first senior goal for the club to secure the three points to move the Addicks up to 2nd in the league.

There could have been further goals, but two were all that were needed as another victory and three points, and a second successive clean sheet was registered.

It was never really in much doubt was it? The Foxes are a good side, but they didn't threaten that often did they, so the win that most expected happened.

I don't agree horseworrier, I think the league is very competitive with almost anyone capable of beating anyone else. Not being big headed but I don't think we will just about make it back automatically, we are more that good enough
