Addicks Out After E.T

The Addicks crashed out of the Carling Cup at the third round stage to League One Luton this evening, after extra time, despite taking a third minute lead.

Alan Pardew made wholesales changes for the Addicks, who had some good chances, a couple of missed opportunities from Izale McLeod proved costly.

Both sides had chances to win the match before extra time, but when this came about, a brilliant save from the aptly named Dean Brill denied Luke Varney as the break in extra time approached, with that proving the turning point as the Hatters went ahead soon after that and didn't look back.

The Addicks were off to a perfect start when Dean Sinclair, 3 minutes, opened the scoring, converting from close range after Izale McLeod's cross.

Steve Robinson, 43 minutes, volleyed home a fine equaliser for the Hatters with half time approaching, how things might have been different if the Addicks could have made it through to half time all square.

The match couldn't be settled in 90 minutes, so extra time was required, and on the stroke of half time in this extra period Matthew Spring, 105 minutes, headed home to give the Hatters the lead.

The Addicks went searching in vein for an equaliser, and the match was wrapped up after a Madjid Bougherra slip allowed Drew Talbot, 118 minutes, in to secure the upset victory.

We have to be disappointed don't we, as I expected us (as I'm sure many of you did?) to win this match. The 10 changes ultimately cost us I suppose, but hey ho we can now “concentrate on the league”, until the FA Cup anyway!

And congratulations to the Hatters though, good luck in the next round.

Well after hearing about the changes that were to be made - I wasn't at all sure of a win - sorry. I would have loved a win yeah - but at least Pardew will know more about certain players now. Which can only be a good thing right? And it's one less distraction ain't it - which is good because we need to "concentrate on the league" as you say. An FA Cup run would be good and we all know Pardew has experience in that area - god damn Stevie G LOL ARGH! Anyway yeah, congrats to the "better team" on the night and if they beat us, then they deserve our good luck wishes LOL

HOW COULD YOU!!!!!! Losing to a bunch of amateurs from up the M1 is disaster...I expect you now to give Watford 3 points at the Valley to show just how sorry you really are.

You can Rightly Concentrate On The League Now, But It's A Shame To See This Competition Being Devalued By The Team Selections....I Hope A Champions League Place Is Gong To Be Agreed For The FA Cup Winners That Way Managers of The Bigger Clubs Will Ensure A Strongest Team In The Competition...
horseworrier
It is a shame I do agree, but as much as I would like to have won this Cup the League is the priority. This Cup is so undervalued by all, and one day (although I hope not) we might see the day when it is scrapped?
Charlton Addickt
It is really isn't it. I hope it isn't scrapped. It's just a pity really! I have to agree HorseWorrier about the CL place - that would be brilliant :) Good insentive for sure.
