The Addicks slipped to a second successive defeat, as further ground was lost on the leaders when Plymouth became the first visiting side to take all three points this season with a 2-1 victory. In a stop start match Rob Styles issue no fewer than ten yellow cards.
It didn't take Argyle long to take the lead, a good move involving Barry Hayles, Peter Halmosi and David Norris was eventually finished by former Man United striker Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, 5 minutes, for him to maintain his good goalscoring form.
The Addicks started in disorganized fashion but were still soon level. Danny Mills, filling in at left back in Chris Powell's absence tried his luck from 25 yards, leaving Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick struggling, unluckily for the Addicks this came back of the post, but then luckily it hit Luke McCormick, 11 minutes, on the leg and went in for an own goal.
This seemed to spur on Argyle more than the Addicks and Peter Halmosi had a header saved by Nicky Weaver before on loan Man United winger Lee Martin put a free kick inches wide.
Having already been denied by a fine last ditch challenge, picked up a yellow card and played in Chris Iwelumo (who should have done better) after intercepting Lilian Nalis' terrible back pass, Svetoslav Todorov, 31 minutes was forced off on a stretcher after a rash challenge.
With halftime getting closer, a minute that changed the match, and ultimately won it occurred. Andy Reid put in a brilliant centre to Chris Iwelumo to head at goal, but he was denied by a fine save from Luke McCormick. A minute later Argyle were ahead again. With possession lost too easily David Norris played through Barry Hayles, 38 minutes, and the veteran made no mistake to beat Nicky Weaver.
The Addicks pushed men forward in the second half but Luke McCormick was not seriously tested, Chris Iwelumo headed just wide, Luke Varney finished weakly and Andy Reid volleyed wide as any real chances failed to materialise and Argyle got the three points they wanted to move above the Addicks in the Championship table.
