One of Ipswich's products of their youth system which also produced Darren Bent the same year. After shining in an Ipswich side that stunned English football after being promoted to the Premier League and finishing in the top 6 that season, gaining a place in Europe in the process.

Ambrose became something of a hit at Ipswich attracting the attention of Sir Bobby Robson who parted with his money to bring the youngster to St James' Park.

After failing to win a regular spot under Graham Souness who took over from Robson at Newcastle, Alan Curbishley splashed out to grab the attacking midfield player.
